TETON GEMS  -  Handmade jewelry, a fine piece of art

 

“All of our glass is made in very small batches giving us the ability to control the high quality and brilliant color of the finished piece of work” states owner, Charlie Smith.  The glass is a fused process that requires 1300-1800 degrees to melt the pieces of glass together.  There are two or more layers fused several times to achieve the final shape and color.  All of the glass is handmade in our studio in North Central Idaho.  The earrings are asymmetrical because of the glass shapes.  The beautiful hand wire wrapping by Helen, makes these pieces of art one-of-a-kind. 

Idaho opal is mined from the Spencer Mine at Spencer , Idaho , 75 miles north of Idaho Falls on Interstate 15.  It is an open pit mine at an elevation of 8000 feet above sea level.  The opal is mined by hand using pry bars, hammers, and chisels.  It is carefully cut into triplets; a layer of basalt, a thin layer of opal, and a quartz cap.  These are all carefully glued together with a waterproof epoxy.  This forms a very stable and durable stone with all the beautiful colors safely displayed.
